”_ *Job/Position Title*:*Community Medicine Coordinator* Status: Nonexempt Date: July 2023 *About Us* Maui Humane Society is a beautiful, open air animal shelter for cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, turtles, and other animals in need of safe shelter.
We are the island’s only open admission animal shelter, which means we take in every pet in need, providing veterinary and routine care and helping surrendered animals find a new home.
We also provide humane law enforcement services, humane education and outreach, and free and low cost spay and neuter surgeries.

Our employees and volunteers love MHS because we have very low euthanasia rates, everyone is empowered to save lives, and we truly care about the people who work here! *Primary Purpose*: Under the supervision of the Director of Medical Services/Chief Vet.
Provides oversight for functions related to the mobile veterinary clinic, including assisting DVMs with routine health examinations of community animals, scheduling and coordination with community partners, and organization and maintenance of the mobile exam areas and equipment.
Responsible for assisting the DVMs with examination and record keeping, inventory of supplies and medications, and maintenance and cleanliness of the mobile unit.
*Essential Duties/Functions:* Assists the veterinarians in the treatment of community animals.
Performs and documents routine health checks on animals including vaccinations and deworming as directed by the veterinarians.
Must be able to recognize, properly document and assist in treatments of necessary common medical conditions (ie.
wounds, ulcers, conjunctivitis, demodectic and sarcoptic mange, ear mites, ringworm etc) with DVM supervision.
Performs diagnostic testing including but not limited to heartworm tests, Felv/FIV tests, skin scrapes, ear cytology, and fecal floatation as directed by the DVM.
Keeps a log of medical treatment for each animal receiving treatment, ensures that records are entered properly and professionally and rechecks are scheduled as needed.
Communicates with other community programs for scheduling of services and approval of set up locations.
Oversees staff members or volunteers assisting with mobile clinic community medicine services and coordinates scheduling and rotations.
Performs medical supply inventory and has general knowledge of where supplies and medications are located at MHS and on the mobile clinic bus.
Has a working understanding of commonly used medications, their proper doses, and indications for use.
Notifies the veterinarian or medical director if any supply of medication is critically low and will need ordering right away.
Keeps the mobile clinic stocked and organized with the necessary drugs and supplies.
Assists owners and the general public with routine health care information.
Has knowledge and understanding of most diseases and conditions commonly dealt with.
Is able to explain treatment/procedures to owners when necessary.
Represents MHS well by providing good customer service.
Assists DVMs with euthanasia and performs euthanasia by injection on various species of animals including dogs, cats, birds, and pocket pets as needed in the field.
(Depending on controlled drug regulations).
Works with other programs within the vet department ie; shelter medicine, surgery medicine to maintain teamwork and support of those programs.
Makes surgery appointments including spay/neuter appointments for animals receiving community care and provides information for other assistance programs (i.
e.
Forever Pets) as needed.
Provides leadership and training of other staff assisting with community medicine services.
Works within grant parameters and generates reporting for grants and other documentation and record keeping.
Equipment maintenance, repair, and research as needed for community medicine.
Performs other duties as assigned by Vet Tech Manager, DVMs and Director of VS.
Promotes and assists in building access to care opportunities for the community of Maui.
*General:* 1.
Knows, understands and follows procedures and policies of the Maui Humane Society.
2.
Must be sufficiently computer literate to be able to utilize our Animal Shelter software and any other program that the veterinary department needs to access.
This includes, but is not limited to, inputting microchip, surgery and owner information, veterinary procedures and findings, and creating health records.
3.
Maintains and promotes a positive public image standard relevant to MHS 4.
Help promote fundraising activities and solicit support of the agency overall.
5.
Attend and participate in departmental and shelter meetings.
Attend educational venues as recommended/approved.
6.
Participate in disaster preparedness and response activities for the shelter and community as it pertains to animal related needs.
7.
Interact with co-workers and volunteers in an efficient and courteous manner to ensure a cooperative team environment amongst all departments.
8.
Report any safety hazards, accidents or unsafe use of MHS equipment.
*Working Conditions *: Working time will be spent at Maui Humane Society in the clinic and hospital room and in the mobile clinic out in the community.
*Equipment Used*: Stethoscope, syringes/needles, fluid pump, microscope, recirculating heating pad, computer, clippers, pole stick, loop sticks, microchip scanner, tablet/laptop, weight scales and traps.
*Mental Demands *: Requires medical knowledge, organization skills, ability to focus under stress, time efficiency, attention to detail and accuracy, and excellent customer service.
Ability to multitask and handle stress is vital.
Must be able to educate, instruct, and empathize with owners.
*Uniform Requirements:* Must wear assigned scrub tops with imprinted MHS logo and embroidered name or name tag, matching scrub pants and closed toe shoes.
*Physical Demands *: ▪ Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and be able to hold and restrain dogs and cats of all sizes.
▪ Quick reflexes and familiarity with animals are necessary to avoid injury.
▪ Must be able to work at a fast pace with a significant amount of standing throughout the day.
▪ Must be able to respond quickly to emergencies.
▪ Efficiency and expediency is required to fulfill required responsibilities.
*Qualification Requirements *: ▪Work experience in a Veterinary Technician or assistant type role ▪ Familiarity with animal diseases and behavior.
▪ Public relations, leadership and customer service skills.
▪ High school graduate or GED.
▪ Positive attitude is a must! *General Requirements:* ▪ Must have a passion for animals and support the mission of the Maui Humane Society.
▪ Must treat animals and owners humanely, with love and concern both on and off the job, and transmit these values to others.
▪ Must adhere to all local laws regarding personally owned animals ▪ General knowledge of pet behavior and care.
Ability to work with all kinds of animals in a safe and responsible manner.
*Additional Qualifications that would benefit this position:* ▪ College experience.
▪ Veterinary related experience or veterinary technician school.
▪ Experience in managerial or other leadership roles.
▪ Fear Free Certification.
▪ Experience or comfort with trauma informed communication.
