Milkweed is the only plant that Monarch Butterfly caterpillars can feed on.
There are various species of milkweed.
This milkweed, Calotropis procera, is a large shrub or small tree growing up to 4.
5 meters tall.
It's flowers a slightly cup-shaped in appearance and their relatively short and broad petals are whitish with purple tips.
Monarch butterflies and bees love the flowers, but most of all Monarch butterflies frequent the plant to lay their eggs.
The caterpillars then feeds on the leaves.
Winter hardy to USDA Zones 10-11.
Thrives in dry to medium soil in full sun.
Remove seed pods before they split open to prevent possible invasive spread of wind-blown seeds.
The milky sap (latex) from stems or leaves is a toxic irritant to skin, sinus and eyes and what protects the Monarch caterpillar from predators.
